![]() ![]() When she wasn’t busy with the Rodeo, Carr ran her public relations company Carr Communications. “Patti Carr has come up with the setup for how to run a tournament, and everyone has copied her methods.” She listens, and she’s built the Rodeo up to where it is today. “Patti’s had some controversy, but she’s always worked to make everybody happy, which is a hard thing to do,” said Tom Greene, of Custom Rod and Reel in Lighthouse Point, a longtime Rodeo sponsor. “Patti really grew the event into the phenomenon that it is today.”Īlthough things haven’t always been easy, Carr has always strived to make the tournament enjoyable for anglers, whether it’s by promoting a family atmosphere or giving more people a chance to win everything from cash to fishing tackle to sport utility vehicles. “Patti is the spark plug of the Rodeo,” said Frank Johnson II, president of Pompano Beach-based MoldCraft Lures and a member of the Rodeo committee for 25 years. He was at a tournament committee meeting in 1982 when he found out that the person who had started the magazine for the 1983 Rodeo would not be able to finish it. Meanwhile, Vince had gone to work for Pipewelders and became president of the company, which specialized in building tuna towers. During her time there, the center increased annual donations from 7,600 units of blood to 40,000 units. Three years later, Carr went to work for the Broward Community Blood Center doing donor recruitment and public relations until leaving in 1982. She and Vince, who managed the Cove Marina in Deerfield Beach, got married and bought a house in Lighthouse Point.
